Let’s talk baby toys. Finding toys for a baby is easy but finding ones that are good for a baby’s development…well that’s another story. And let’s be clear – you’ve got to make the distinction between a newborn, a 3 month old, 6 month old, etc. Because as a baby grows, they need toys to match their stage of development. As you take a look through our selection of unique baby toys, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Toys for a newborn: A newborn baby is briefly looking at objects and attempting to imitate facial expressions. They can follow objects with their eyes and usually quiet down, when they are picked up. They are developing a unique cry for hunger. But the development doesn’t stop there. Focus on tummy time with playmats. Take the time to read baby books (this is just the beginning of books) and keep putting the rattles in their little hands. This time is not much about toys, but just wait…it’ll come.

Toys for a three month old: Things are picking up speed and your little one will be doing a lot more than just eating and sleeping. They will enjoy ‘frolic play’, reaching for objects and will repeat enjoyable activities. Believe it or not, they will respond to ‘no’ (about half the time) and will start babbling. They’ll grasp the string of a pull-toy and emotionally, will start to learn trust vs basic mistrust.

Toys for a six month old: Wow…your little one is already 6 months old. When you are looking at toys for your baby, keep these things in mind; they’ll search for hidden objects (object permanence) and one of our favorite toys for this is the stacking toy and ball game They’ll reach for themselves in the mirror, play peekaboo, crumple paper, roll from their stomach to their back and even respond to their name.

Toys for a nine month old: Your baby was just born…and their first birthday is just 3 months away! They are pushing toy cars, playing pat-a-cake and looking for hidden sounds. The baby toys they are playing with are also getting more fun. If you are buying for a 9 month old, please make sure to look at the age appropriate baby toys – as the baby’s development and abilities are very different than just a few months ago.

You’ve got to be kidding…your baby’s first year is almost history. Can you believe it? You started out with tummy time and now your little one is going to be walking soon (if they are not already).

If you want to go beyond the first year (from newborn to 9 months), and learn more about a baby’s development (beyond toys), you may enjoy this article on what to expect during the second year of your child's life.
